POSITION SUMMARY
Our client, an organization operating in a highly regulated insurance environment, is looking for a Product Owner to support a newly formed finance-focused product domain. This role sits at the center of mission-critical financial systems — policyholder payments and dividends, collections, projections, audit reporting, and reconciliations — and is a contract opportunity with remote flexibility anywhere in the United States.
This Product Owner operates as a true PO/BA hybrid. The work is heavily backend, data, and process oriented, with significantly less emphasis on UI or customer-facing product design. Success here depends less on backlog theory and more on hands-on execution: personally writing clear, unambiguous user stories, running efficient agile ceremonies, and staying engaged in technical discussions with a development team that includes both long-tenured staff and newer contractors.
You'll partner closely with finance stakeholders to document currently undocumented, legacy financial logic, support an active migration off legacy platforms onto modern ones (including a parallel reporting-tool migration), and help the business build internal ownership in an area where no dedicated subject matter expert exists today. The team values speed balanced with quality — favoring simple, working solutions that can be iterated on over exhaustive, fully-polished approaches that slow momentum.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own and prioritize the backlog for a newly established finance domain, aligning work to business goals, operational risk, and platform modernization efforts
- Personally write high-quality, unambiguous user stories and acceptance criteria in GitLab, ensuring they meet Definition of Ready before entering a sprint
- Run efficient backlog refinement sessions, ensuring stories are understood by the team and sliced correctly
- Facilitate daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and reviews; help unblock dependencies and keep the team focused on committed goals
- Establish trust with the development team; respect the team's technical expertise while owning the “what” and “why”
- Shield the team from scope creep, shifting priorities, and external noise during active sprints
- Partner with finance stakeholders, technical teams, and business partners to gather requirements and translate complex business processes into epics, features, and user stories
- Drive discovery and documentation of current-state financial workflows, system logic, dependencies, and upstream/downstream data impacts
- Uncover and map business processes that are not yet well documented, including legacy logic embedded in long-standing systems
- Facilitate the transition of financial processes and reporting workflows from legacy environments to modern platforms
- Support data cleanup and data quality initiatives by identifying process gaps, inconsistencies, and root causes of reporting inaccuracies
- Act as the first line of defense for the development team's day-to-day questions to prevent unnecessary context-switching and delays
- Build relationships with external domain teams to evaluate, score, and prioritize data issues with material business impact
- Create and maintain documentation that enables stronger business ownership and long-term knowledge transfer
- Communicate roadmap progress in terms of how it improves financial systems reliability, stability, and year-end financial outcomes
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
- 3+ years of experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or a blended PO/BA professional in an agile environment
- Direct, hands-on ownership of the full ticket lifecycle — personally authoring user stories and acceptance criteria rather than relying on others to write them
- Proven experience working on backend, data-intensive, or process-heavy initiatives rather than primarily UI-focused product work
- A track record of proactive, visible engagement in meetings and technical discussions — comfortable staying present and engaged rather than working heads-down and disconnected
- Demonstrated ability to balance thoroughness with delivery speed, favoring simple, working solutions that can be iterated on over exhaustive analysis
- Comfortable operating with ambiguous ownership boundaries across a mixed team of tenured staff and newer contractors, and proactive about seeking clarification
- Strong ability to gather requirements, document workflows, and translate complex business needs into clear technical work items
- Working knowledge of core financial processes and systems, such as:
- Cash receipts and financial reconciliations
- Financial and regulatory reporting
- Payment processing integrations (e.g., lockbox, ACH, card networks, third-party payment gateways)
- Cloud data warehouse environments (e.g., BigQuery or similar)
- Experience supporting agile ceremonies such as backlog grooming, sprint planning, and story refinement
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future
ADDITIONAL PLUS
- Experience in insurance, fintech, or another highly regulated environment
- Exposure to dividend processing, unclaimed-property/escheatment compliance, or 1099-related financial workflows
- Experience with reporting platforms or analytics environments such as MicroStrategy, Looker, or similar tools
- Exposure to Salesforce or other platform modernization efforts
- Ability to run reports, interpret reporting logic, or partner closely with reporting and analytics teams
- Exposure to AI-assisted tooling (e.g., Copilot) used to interrogate legacy code and understand current-state logic
- Experience with legacy system transformation, data cleanup, or migration initiatives
SALARY / WAGE RANGE
$55.00–$70.00/hour
Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience, and may fall outside of the range shown.
