POSITION SUMMARY
Our client is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization driving research, advocacy, and services in the healthcare space — with a workforce spanning remote employees across the country and a deeply mission-driven culture. They are in the early stages of a major, multi-year technology transformation: building a Unified Data Foundation that will modernize how the organization manages, accesses, and uses data to drive smarter decisions, improve operational efficiency, and enable AI-ready analytics.
This is a brand new role created specifically to lead the business-facing side of that initiative. You won't be writing code or building pipelines — that's handled by an established engineering team. What you will be doing is partnering directly with business stakeholders across the organization to surface data use cases, resolve conflicting definitions, and design a shared semantic layer that makes enterprise data understandable and actionable for everyone.
The ideal candidate is someone who sits comfortably at the intersection of business and technology — fluent enough in data modeling and semantic layer concepts to collaborate with engineers, but effective enough with non-technical stakeholders to facilitate alignment across departments on something as foundational as “what does a constituent actually mean here?” You've done this kind of work before, you can walk in with limited hand-holding, and you're energized by the idea of building something that will shape how an organization uses data for years to come.
This is a full-time, remote position. Core working hours align with Pacific time (7:30 AM PT standup with engineering).
Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the design and evolution of the organization's semantic layer — the business-facing data foundation — defining shared metrics, entities, and relationships across functional areas.
- Partner with business stakeholders across departments to surface data use cases, identify pain points, and translate operational requirements into scalable data models.
- Facilitate cross-functional workshops to align stakeholders on shared business definitions, enterprise KPIs, and data dictionary standards.
- Build and maintain enterprise data dictionaries and data glossaries so that all teams share consistent definitions for critical data elements.
- Own the business layer of the Unified Data Foundation program end-to-end — from use case intake through modeling, adoption, and ongoing governance.
- Collaborate with data engineering and architecture teams to ensure semantic models align with underlying data structures and platform capabilities.
- Reduce reporting inconsistency and conflicting metric definitions by establishing canonical, reusable data assets across the organization.
- Drive self-service analytics adoption by improving data accessibility and building intuitive, business-friendly reporting structures.
- Evaluate and recommend semantic modeling tools and frameworks as the program evolves and business needs mature.
- Manage data assets as products — tracking lifecycle, usability, adoption, and alignment with ongoing business priorities.
- Represent the data office as a knowledge leader in semantic modeling and enterprise data design, defining best practices and guiding cross-functional teams.
- Support decommissioning of legacy data warehouse infrastructure as part of the broader platform modernization program.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
- 5+ years of experience in data roles with a focus on semantic layer design, business data modeling, or enterprise analytics enablement.
- Demonstrated ability to design and manage a semantic or business-facing data layer — including dimensional modeling, shared metric frameworks, and reusable reporting structures.
- Proven track record translating business processes and requirements into scalable data models that cross multiple functional areas.
- Strong cross-functional facilitation skills — able to bring together business, analytics, and technology stakeholders and drive consensus on data definitions and priorities.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly explain data concepts to non-technical audiences without oversimplifying the work.
- Experience with modern data architectures — familiarity with data warehouses, semantic/BI layers, or enterprise data catalog concepts.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction — this role requires ownership from day one, not step-by-step guidance.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
ADDITIONAL PLUS
- Hands-on experience with semantic modeling or BI tools such as dbt, Snowflake, LookML, or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with emerging semantic layer or data mesh tools and approaches.
- SQL skills for ad hoc data exploration and validation.
- Experience working in agile, product-based, or matrixed environments.
- Background in CRM, fundraising, membership, or similar operational data domains.
- Experience in mission-driven, nonprofit, or healthcare-adjacent organizations.
- Exposure to data governance frameworks or standing up data stewardship councils.
